Jim Phillips, Sigma '79


A skilled litigator and champion for education, Jim Phillips, Sigma '79, has had a distinguished career in law and in service to the State of North Carolina.  He was elected student body president at the University of North Carolina, and he earned his law degree with highest honors from Wake Forest University, serving as editor in chief of the Law Review.  Professionally, Jim has litigated complex business matters in federal and state courts in North Carolina and across the United States for which he has received numerous accolades.  In addition to his private practice, Brother Phillips served for three years during the 1990s as Legislative Counsel to the Honorable Jim Hunt, Governor of North Carolina.


Jim’s devotion to his community is exemplified through his service on many boards and commissions including, Triad Stage, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, the Research Triangle Foundation, the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, the James B. Hunt Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy Foundation, the Family and Children's Services of Greensboro, and Alpha Sigma of Chi Psi, Inc. 


Most notably, Brother Phillips served from 1997 through 2008 on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, the governing body for the 17 campus University system.  From 2006 to 2008, Jim served as the Board's chair, and was lauded throughout the system for his outreach to the various campuses and his support for innovative approaches to higher education.  He was a tireless advocate for funding the University at a level to ensure quality education at an affordable cost for all North Carolina residents.
