The Bicentennial Society: Planned Giving
Share |

Planned giving is a thoughtful way to make a charitable gift to help future generations of Chi Psi brothers enhance their fraternal and educational experience. Planned giving helps in two ways: It provides much needed funding for the Chi Psi Educational Trust, while also benefiting your family and heirs.

From its founding in 1841, Chi Psi has enhanced the collegiate experience for thousands of young men.  For more than 175 years, Chi Psi has continuously evolved to remain a beneficial complement to the educational missions pursued at host institutions, while remaining true to our core values.

The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc. provides funding for programs in leadership development, introspective analysis, values-based alcohol education, and Alpha management, as well as opportunities to compete for scholarships and fellowships. This support enables Chi Psi to fulfill its role in the educational mission, and to touch the lives of every man who joins our Brotherhood.

Like all charitable organizations, the Chi Psi Educational Trust depends upon public, unrestricted support – particularly from Brothers of Chi Psi and their families - to advance its important mission. Since the founding of the Educational Trust in 1926, we have been fortunate to receive many planned gifts to support educational endeavors.

We encourage you and all alumni to consider supporting the work of the Trust through some form of planned giving. Here are a few ways you may support the Chi Psi Educational Trust:

Appreciated Assets

By donating appreciated assets, such as stock, to the Trust you avoid the capital gains tax and receive a tax deduction as well for the appreciated fair market value as well. A donation of stock to the Trust is much appreciated.

A bequest is a gift by will or trust that is paid after your death.
Bequests are popular giving methods because they cost nothing to the donor while the donor is still alive and a bequest to charity can qualify for a charitable estate tax deduction.

For some, a major gift to the Trust during their lives is not possible, but, they can leave a bequest to the Trust at their death through their will or other estate planning document. If you would like, we can work with you and your attorneys to assist in drafting the portions of a will or trust that concern the Trust.

If you would like to leave a bequest to the Trust, we recommend the following language or something similar:

“I give, devise, and bequeath the sum of $___________ to the Chi Psi Educational Trust, a non-profit corporation, to be used to support its general charitable purposes.”

Life Insurance

You can also support the Trust using life insurance and possibly even get an income tax charitable deduction in the process. For a relatively small amount of money, normally over a term of years, one can make a sizeable gift to the Trust.

If you donate an existing life insurance policy to the Trust you may receive an income tax charitable deduction for the value of the policy. Whether you donate an existing policy of arrange to establish a new policy owned by the Trust the annual premiums are tax deductible as a charitable contribution. The normal method of handling this is to donate the premium to the Trust which then pays the premium to the insurance company.

Life Income Gifts

There are ways of giving that will enable you to receive payments for the remainder of your life. A charitable remainder trust is a trust that provides a benefit to the donor who establishes the trust (or someone else chosen by the donor) and benefits the Trust after the donor’s death. This is a more complex method of benefiting the Trust and would require the involvement of your accountant and attorney.

Please consider letting the Chi Psi Central Office know if you make a gift in one of these ways so we may update our records.

Brothers who include The Chi Psi Educational Trust as a beneficiary in their estate plan are recognized as members of the Trust’s Bicentennial Society.
