One year ago today, Capt. Joseph W. Schultz, HΔ `97 was killed in action in Northern Afghanistan, and to honor his sacrifice for our country, his mother Betsy Reed Schultz was invited to join President and Mrs. Obama for breakfast at the White House yesterday.

Betsy Reed Schultz is one of nearly 100 Gold Star Family members invited to the White House ceremony this year, and while she considers this a profound honor, it cannot cover the grief she feels on this day.

Almost one year to the day after her son's death, Betsy joined the president and other families of fallen soldiers in visiting Arlington National Cemetery, where Joe was buried with full military honors.

Betsy has turned her personal tragedy into an opportunity to help those families of military men and women who have paid the ultimate price. Last year, Betsy created the Captain Joseph House Foundation to care for families of the Fallen by offering respite and educational support in Port Angeles, Washington where families can enjoy the comforts of a home away from home throughout their tragedy.

Joe was the subject of an article in the Fall 2011 issue of The Purple and Gold, and in April, a number of Eta Delta Brothers along with family and friends organized Let's Run for Joe, running in the Big Sur International Marathon to raise funds and awareness for the Captain Joseph House Foundation.

Shultz recently wrote the Chi Psi Central Office to thank the Fraternity for the support Joe's Brothers across the country have shown during this difficult year:
