Professor Don Hickey, ZΔ '66, took a moment out of his high demand schedule while in Norfolk, Virginia as part of "OP SAIL 2012." to visit with an old friend. During his invitation to Norfolk by the Virginia Arts Festival planners, Don made a spectacular presentation on his renown specialty: The War of 1812.

Fellow Naval history enthusiast and Chi Psi Brother, Rich Kessmann, ZΔ '65, invited a Navy friend, Michael Purcell and his high school aged son, Kiernan to witness the lecture. All 230+ in attendance raved about Don's well-researched expertise and captivating talk that enlightened many to facts that separate historic events from the many myths.

The question and answer period that followed the rapid fire one-hour lecture, was met with Professor Hickey's astonishingly precise knowledge and factual examples of the "chain of events" that he related to all in a delightfully understandable and humorous fashion, to further elevate audience interest and participation.

The sumptuous reception that followed was a celebration of brother Hickey's achievement and encouragement for everyone to want to own a signed copy of his recent work The War of 1812, The Forgotten Conflict.

Kessman says, "It was a treat indeed, to meet the published author and featured celebrity of PBS and History Channel acclaim. And as we age, we can only hope to cross trails to grow stronger in the bonds."

Br. Hickey helped to found Alpha Tau Delta at the University of the South in 1964. Entering Sewanee in 1963 as a transfer student from the University of Illinois, he gathered a group of interested men that would later become the thirty-seventh Alpha in Chi Psi's history. Hickey transferred back to Illinois where he was in line to become #1, but he left a mark of great respect on the entire University community at Sewanee.
