Spring P&G Preview

The spring issue of The Purple and Gold will be mailed out soon, but before it comes to your mailbox here is a preview of what you will see. In addition to the major articles highlighted below, the issue also includes a feature on this year’s Mid-Year Leadership Retreat and Rowe Regional Leadership Conferences as well as a preview of the 171st Convention.

If you have not been receiving your issues of the P&G, we may have an outdated address for you. Please take some time before April 15 to update your address and ensure that you continue to receive the P&G and other Chi Psi materials.

Brothers Expand Horizons through Travel

Universities have long encouraged study abroad as a vital part of the undergraduate and graduate learning process. The immersion in another culture is the best way to truly learn a language and understand our own American culture in reference to the rest of the world, and in today’s global economy, this cultural understanding has become paramount. Today’s undergraduates truly understand embody that spirit of adventure that Philip Spencer personified and are traveling to many countries across the globe.

Alpha Rho Brothers Journey to Peru
Merging the cultural learning of study abroad with the great brotherhood of Chi Psi, several Alphas have begun organizing group travel experiences. This past January, thirteen Brothers from Alpha Rho took what one Brother describes as "a trip of a lifetime.” During their winter break, these Brothers traveled from Rutgers in New Jersey to Peru, where they journeyed through Lima and Cuzco and hiked the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Alpha Rho Delta Brothers Trek through Argentina
Three Rho Delta Brothers recently traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina over their winter break for ten days. The culminating experience of a semester-long outdoor leadership course offered by Miami University’s honors program, the trip included four men and six women in addition to the three Chi Psis.

Alpha Sigma Foundation Funds Enriching Experiences through Scholarship Program
In 2008, the Alpha Sigma Foundation began a unique scholarship program to ensure that Sigma Brothers would be able to experience these life-changing travel opportunities throughout their studies at the University of North Carolina. The Summer Enrichment Scholarship is awarded to undergraduates who devote their summers to experiences that enrich the Brothers as scholars and servants to the greater good.

Good News from The Chi Psi Educational Trust

Alpha Epsilon Awards First Jerome George Rachey Memorial Scholarship
On January 21, 2012, the Epsilon Educational Endowment awarded $10,000 to the first-ever recipient of the Jerome George Rachey, E ’84, Memorial Scholarship. Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the scholarship has been established to honor the Alpha’s former cook and Brother Jerry.

Tom Brown, Epsilon `66, Memorialized with Trust Scholarship
After receiving its largest ever bequest from the estate of Thomas H. Brown, E `66, a gift in excess of $760,000, The Chi Psi Educational Trust has established the Tom Brown Memorial Scholarship. The Tom Brown Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate Brother who exhibits strong entrepreneurial spirit and achievement, which should be explained in an essay the applicant will complete.

Verne G. Istock, E ’62, Joins Trust and Makes Generous Gift
In October, Verne G. Istock, E ’62, became the newest Trustee of The Chi Psi Educational Trust. Br. Istock has made his dedication to the educational efforts supported by the Trust very clear with his recent gift of $100,000 in unrestricted funds.

Strong Extension Efforts are Underway

Chi Psi Returns to UGA
In August of 2011, Chi Psi began efforts to re-establish Alpha Alpha Delta of Chi Psi at the University of Georgia. Through hard work, long hours, determination, and countless sorority presentations – hey every job has its perks –13 young men were identified to begin the task of rebuilding this once-great Alpha. In January 2012, under the control of the re-establishing members and with the guidance of local alumni and the Central Office, Alpha Alpha Delta began all fraternal operations for the first time in 3 years.

Chi Psi is Returning to Wesleyan
In the fall of 2011, an interest group contacted Alpha Alpha alumni and the Central Office to express interest in re-founding Chi Psi at Wesleyan, and Chi Psi excitedly began work to possibly re-found one of our oldest Alphas. On February 23, 2012, Chi Psi officially endorsed the effort to re-establish the fraternity’s rich tradition at Alpha Alpha of Chi Psi as the Executive Council granted colony status to a group of twelve freshman men at Wesleyan University.
