In its second year, the Mid-Year Leadership Retreat again proved to be an excellent opportunity for 35 of Chi Psi's undergraduate leaders to build relationships, share ideas and best practices and learn skills in leadership and Alpha management.
With financial support from The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc., #1s and other undergraduate leaders gathered outside Nashville, Tenn. from January 2-5 for a leadership training retreat facilitated by Central Office staff and trained peer facilitators. Used as companion programming to the Spencer Institute, The Mid-Year Leadership Retreat provides our Alphas' leaders with the necessary tools to effectively oversee strong daily operations while allowing them to build relationships with other undergraduate leaders and learn from one another's best practices.
"Overall the relationships and connections built with men of other Alphas were truly rewarding. If was great to meet similar minds and discuss ways to tackle potential issues we may all face," says Alpha Upsilon Delta's current #1 Brian Murphy '13.
That sentiment is echoed by Tau Delta #3 Ryan Currie '13 who says, "The best part was getting to know Brothers from other Alphas and the staff from the Central Office. It was awesome to work through problems with other Alpha leaders outside of the structure of the retreat."
In a casual camp atmosphere, the retreat consists of a combination of high-level presentations from staff and peer facilitators as well as a series of discussion exercises on topics such as general Alpha administration, risk management, recruitment, pledge education, and the Program for Excellence.
After receiving excellent feedback from last year's pilot, this year's retreat was expanding from 3 days to four and opened to all Alphas rather than a test segment. Feedback has been extremely positive thus far, and we hope to continue to develop this exciting program in the future. The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc. still seeking the necessary funding to secure this future of the Mid-Year Leadership Retreat.
