The Don Gowan Memorial Court was unveiled yesterday. Named for Don Gowan, Σ '70, the Kent Center School basketball facility honors the former high school basketball star, teacher, administrator and coach.

After his death in 2008, Gowan's Kent classmates started an effort to raise $200,000 to renovate the South Court basketball court in his memory, and to rename it Gowan Court. Renovations include a new wood floor, new baskets and rims as well as new bleachers.

While at Kent, Don was the captain of the basketball team his junior and senior years and his 1966 team won the League Championship with a record of 12-0. He went on to play on the freshman basketball team in 1967 at the University of North Carolina where he was a Morehead Scholar and was initiated into Alpha Sigma and served as #1.

In 1970, he returned to Kent School as an American history teacher, and the assistant Dean of Boys. He later became Dean of Boys, and then Dean of Students when the boys' and girls' campuses were consolidated. Following his retirement from the dean's office he became the Head of the History Department and held the Salm Teaching Chair. He coached varsity football and basketball and started the Lacrosse program in the spring of 1971. He stepped down as the head Lacrosse coach after 29 years, having coached six All-Americans winning four Division I and II championships, and being chosen as New England coach of the year . He remained on the coaching staff of the football and basketball programs for his entire 38 years at Kent. As the Varsity basketball coach from 1978 to 2008 he earned a record of 307-298, and won 6 league championships.
