Chi Psi Honors our Military Brothers

Joseph Schultz, HΔ '97, Led from the Front
By Andrew Pridgen, HΔ '97

On May 31, 2011, I learned of the death of Army Capt. Joseph W. Schultz, HΔ '97. After receiving the call from our mutual friend and pledge brother, Sam Bessey, HΔ '97, I pulled over to the side of the road, got out of my car, and ran.

The man who would become a Green Beret and lead a platoon of the elite fighting squad died May 29, 2011 — the Sunday before Memorial Day — at the onset of the deadliest summer in the decade the US has been fighting in Afghanistan.

Those who would like to participate with Joe's Chi Psi brothers in a weekend to honor him can visit get details on the Big Sur Marathon and Relay Sunday, April 29, 2012.

Chi Psi Remembers United Flight 93 Hero Mark Bingham, ΔΔ '93

September 11, 2011 marked the tenth anniversary of the heroic death of Mark Bingham, ΔΔ '93. It is widely believed that Br. Bingham and three other men confronted the terrorists on United Flight 93 on the morning of September 11, 2001 and that their actions brought the plane down before it could hit its intended target.

Br. Bingham was honored at the 170th Annual Convention in Ann Arbor, MI. He was posthumously conferred the Albert S. Bard Award, Citation 23. His mother Alice Hoagland served as the Spencer Institute's keynote speaker. As a national hero and part of the fabric of Chi Psi, Br. Bingham personifies the ideals of Chi Psi. With that in mind, the Executive Council is currently considering the most appropriate and meaningful way to honor Mark permanently.

Offering Thanks for All Military Brothers

Joe and Mark are just two of the many Chi Psi Brothers who have sacrificed of themselves for our country since the events on September 11, 2001. In this issue we recognize these men who each exemplify the loyal, selfless nature of the ideal Chi Psi gentleman. In addition to these men who have served in recent years, there are many Chi Psi Brothers who have long deserved recognition for their patriotic sacrifice. To that end, Chi Psi has made available a complete list of military Brothers, which can be found online at We understand that this list is in no way complete, and we are actively working to make sure that all Chi Psi servicemen are recognized. If you have information on any Brothers who have served in the military, please contact Teri Forsythe at or 615-736-2520 to add to our list.

Good News from The Chi Psi Educational Trust

The Peter Paul Miller Scholarship Has Been Repurposed

The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc., in conjunction with the Miller family, has recently repurposed the Peter Paul Miller Scholarship. The former award for scholarship chairmen and other academically-focused Alpha officers is now available as the Peter Paul Miller Educational Travel Grant.

Trust Offers Improved Programs for Alumni Volunteers

In recent years, Chi Psi has seen great change in the undergraduates of today from those of generations past. It has become clear that strong support and guidance from active alumni advisors is of vital importance to the success of Chi Psi's Alphas. This has led to a greater alumni focus in the educational programming offered by The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc. Programs like the Spencer Institute have been updated to provide greater alumni education, and, in 2006-2007, the Fraternity initiated a management retreat for alumni boards, one that would provide a complement to the Alpha Management Retreat. This Alumni Board Management Retreat (ABMR) seeks to provide undergraduates and alumni leaders with a unifying vision for the Alpha.

2010 Founders Trophy Winner, Alpha Iota Delta, Credits Trust Programming for Recent Successes

The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc. provides funds and develops a variety of educational programming opportunities to provide our Alphas with the best in leadership, personal and professional development education. These educational programs provide undergraduates with the necessary tools to excel personally and as an Alpha.

Chi Psi Comes Home to Colorado with Alpha Psi Delta Reinstallation

On August 6, 2011, the Chi Psi Convention passed by unanimous vote a motion to restore Alpha Psi Delta at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The decision marked the culmination of years of tireless work on the part of undergraduates and alumni from several Alphas to pioneer new ways of providing a fraternal experience to students at Colorado.
