Trey Walker, B '89, a 20-year political veteran, is leaving his post as South Carolina's Gov. Nikki Haley’s deputy chief of staff, in charge of communications and legislative affairs, to become the University of South Carolina's chief lobbyist.

Walker is one of three deputies who serve under Haley and her chief of staff, Tim Pearson. A 1989 graduate of USC known for his love of Gamecock sports, Walker will assume his new post sometime this month, taking on one of the most coveted lobbying jobs at the State House.

"Trey Walker was a huge part of the successes we shared this first year,” Haley said in a statement Thursday. "He’s a talented, loyal and committed guy — and the University of South Carolina is lucky to have him.”

"Proudly serving the governor and this administration has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life — the victories and friendship will be treasured forever,” Walker said Thursday. "I will forever be her fierce ally and grateful advocate.”

USC officials say they welcome Walker, a former director for the state Republican Party, a former chief assistant to then-Attorney General Henry McMaster and director of U.S. Sen. John McCain’s S.C. primary campaign in 2008. Walker’s post at USC is a new one, created for him, school officials said.

"Trey Walker is not only an experienced government relations professional, but he exudes Gamecock pride,” said Luanne Lawrence, a USC vice president. "During the interview process, it was clear that he had the established contacts in the General Assembly, the governor’s office and throughout the state of South Carolina that USC needs in growing its presence.”
