Giffin Daughtridge, Σ '11, has been named a 2011-2012 Fulbright Fellow. Daughtridge is one of seventeen University of North Carolina students to win the prestigious fellowship.

Br. Daughtridge recently graduated from UNC where he majored in biology and Spanish. He plans to use his fellowship to conduct his project "The Epidemiology of the Hepatitis B Virus After 20 years of Vaccination" in Columbia.

While at Carolina, Daughtridge participated in the University Honors Program and was a Carolina Research Scholar. He conducted a number of undergraduate research efforts with the Medical University of South Carolina and the UNC Hospitals lab as well as with a NASA grant. In addition to academics, Br. Daughtridge served Alpha Sigma as Social Chair, Assistant Social Chair and Recruitment Chair.

According to the programs' website, Congress established the Fulbright Program in 1946 "to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges.” Sen. J. William Fulbright, sponsor of the legislation, saw scholarship as an alternative to armed conflict. Today the program is funded by an annual Congressional appropriation and contributions from other participating countries, allowing Americans to teach or conduct research in more than 100 nations.
