Donald Frank Kreger, Epsilon Delta 1951, 1929 - 2011

My friend Don Kreger died yesterday. He was 81 years old. Don’s son Mark tells Dick Simester, EΔ`53, funeral services will be this Friday in Flossmoor, Illinois.

Don was initiated into Chi Psi on 14 May 1948 at the recently re-established Alpha Epsilon Delta at Northwestern University. Upon graduation he quickly became active in his Alpha’s alumni board, beginning what would be a lifetime of Fraternity involvement. Don helped lead Chicago area Fraternity affairs and served as a Trustee of The Chi Psi Educational Trust and a member of the Executive Council. He chaired the Council in 1990 and 1991. Br. Kreger was the 104th recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in 1988. His citation states: "His concern for his Brothers’ welfare reveals deep warmth and fraternal affection.”

Don was named the 10th #23 of Chi Psi in 1996 and oversaw the move of the Central Office from Ann Arbor to Olympia Fields. Following his service as Executive Director, Don spent most of his time in Belvedere, California with wife Wendy who predeceased him in 2007. While in California, Don served as Treasurer of the Delta Delta Lodge Association and hosted several memorable Bay Area Chi Psi events. Don was a character, and he will be missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at Flossmoor Community Church in Flossmoor, Illinois on Friday, 28 January 2011 at 10 a.m, followed by a private burial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Homewood Flossmoor H.S. Foundation or Chi Psi Educational Trust are appreciated. A Chicago Tribune obituary for Brother Kreger can be viewed here.

As additional information becomes available, it will be posted at

Don was an active supporter of The Chi Psi Educational Trust and the Central Office well before I met him in 1983. Since getting to know Don then after I moved to Chicago, I valued his perspective and commitment to the values of Chi Psi. He remained a loyal and dedicated Brother whom I called upon many times to assist in coping with the challenges we faced in both organizations during the late '80's and early 90's. One of his sincerest regrets was not being able to fulfill some of the financial promises he had made to the Educational Trust and the Fraternity in these last few years of his life. When my resources permit, I look forward to making a memorial gift in Don's honor, as part of those promises. Bob Dearth AA'66
