Bill Gates Sr., Theta Delta ’49, Honored with 2010 Bard Award

Chi Psi recently recognized Bill Gates Sr. with the Albert S. Bard Award, honoring his many contributions to the intellectual and cultural life of the world around him. Aside from being father to one of the most influential men in the world, Gates has spent his life tirelessly advocating for the assurance of a quality education for all.

Gates has a great perspective on life and people’s ability to achieve excellence in the face of adversity. Chi Psi Brothers in attendance at the Educational Trust Dinner at this year’s Convention had the great privilege of hearing some of Gates’ thoughts first hand. Gates spoke a great deal on the importance of providing young children with ample educational opportunity, the importance of recognizing the shift in today’s family structures and providing all children with positive models to encourage learning.

Brother Gates complimented the undergraduate leaders on the successes they are having within their Alphas and said that he was impressed with the work our Alphas are doing on their campuses and in their communities. He encouraged all undergraduate Brothers to use their collective resources to continue working to improve the world around them.

Report of the #23: Chi Psi’s Position of Strength

Chi Psi operates today from a position of strength built upon a foundation of financial stability, a proactive risk management program, the introduction of the Program for Excellence, and growth, both in new Alphas and in the size of existing Alphas. The 2009-10 year continued a long-running trend of success.

Leveraging on our position of strength, we have developed a plan to drive our family forward. With the leadership in place to coordinate and implement this plan, we will achieve success. For this plan to work, it will require the dedication of precious resources. Through the direction and guidance of the Educational Trust and the Executive Council, we are prepared to support our plan in 2010-2011.

The Chi Psi Educational Trust has received its largest ever bequest from the estate of Thomas H. Brown, E ’66. Remembered for his even temper and pleasant nature, Brother Brown’s gift will be in excess of $760,000.

Alpha Nu Alumni Spotlight

Twenty Years of Brotherhood for Several Alumni of Alpha Nu
While many see membership in a Greek organization as a fun college experience, those that get the most out of their fraternity experience understand that it is a lifelong commitment. Chi Psi is an enduring Brotherhood, and several alumni of Alpha Nu at the University of Minnesota truly take that idea to heart. For more than 20 years, these brothers have been organizing an annual golf tournament to reconnect with Brothers and reminisce about their collegiate days in Chi Psi.

How Chi Psi Helped Randall Taylor, N’84, Meet the Queen
To Randall Lenox Taylor, Nu ’84, being a member of Alpha Nu in the early 1980s was a life-altering experience as so many remarkable men profoundly impacted him. While he learned a lot from his classes, it was at the Lodge that he learned social ability, and it was through his friends and Chi Psi that he found his career, eventually leading him to an incredible opportunity: meeting the Queen of England, Elizabeth II.

T. Denny Sanford, N’58, Hall of Fame Dedicated at University of Minnesota

The dedication and open house featured a ceremonial ribbon cutting by Director of Athletics Joel Maturi, University President Robert Bruininks, and the guest of honor himself, T. Denny Sanford, Alpha Nu ’58.

169th Convention Held in Purple and Gold Country

Do those guys from U-Dub know how to make us feel welcome, or what? As delegates arrived at the Seattle airport, the electronic sign welcomed all to "Purple and Gold Country.” We knew it was going to be a great Convention. (One could wonder, we suppose, if the billboard also referred to the University of Washington’s purple and gold colors, but we’ll assume it was there just for Chi Psi.)

A Postwar Snapshot at Yale…Alpha Kappa Delta in 1946-50

In the immediate post World War II years, Yale reverted to an approximation of its pre-war self, a major difference being the overcrowding occasioned by a crush of returning veterans, well financed by the GI Bill, who were superimposed on the usual supply of high school graduates. By 1946, the University attitude towards Greeks had changed from acceptance to tolerance and then to outright hostility, stemming from Yale’s belief that fraternities had a negative impact on its commitment to the college concept.
