169th Annual Convention in Review

Last week’s 169th Annual Convention in Seattle, Wash. proved to be a great success! Alpha Theta Delta served as the Convention host, receiving great reviews from all in attendance.
With several Fraternity leaders completing their terms of service, a number of new Brothers were elected to those positions. Hans Minea, Theta Delta `11, and Nick Huber, Rho Delta `11, were elected to serve as the Undergraduate Representatives on the Executive Council. Both currently serve as #1s for their respective Alphas.

Daniel B. Ahlberg MD, Nu `67, was elected to his third consecutive three-year term as #7, and beginning three-year terms on the Executive Council are Kevin Almond, Sigma `83, Paul Wright, Omicron `82, and Michael Carlson, Nu `05.

Kevin Almond, RPh, is the Associate Dean for Advancement for UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, President of the Pharmacy Foundation of North Carolina, and Executive Director of the Pharmacy Alumni Association. He has also served on a number of boards in the fields of health and pharmaceuticals.

Paul Wright works as a private real estate investor as well as a political consultant in Charlottesville, Va. He has been very active with his own Alpha Omicron and was a member and past president of the University of Virginia Fraternity Alumni Council.

Michael Carlson, CPA, is a Senior Accountant for Wipfli LLP in St. Paul, Minn. As an undergraduate, he served as Executive Council Undergraduate Representative for two years, and he currently serves as Treasurer for the Northwestern Chi Psi Educational Foundation, Inc. He is also a member of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Completing terms of service in Seattle were undergraduate members Justin Froeber, Pi Delta `10 and Andy Heger, Zeta Delta `10. Kurt Gilliland, Sigma `92, and Jim Lazarus, Sigma Delta `01, finished six-year terms as alumni members of the board. Chi Psi would like to thank Jim and Kurt for their many years of service.

In addition to these changes in leadership, Convention’s educational programming was very successful. The Program for Excellence was the primary focus of The Spencer Institute, and it was incredibly well received by all participants.

Many attendees were very impressed by the quality of undergraduate delegates at this year’s Convention. Alpha Theta Delta hosted a luau party on Friday night at the Lodge, and it was one of the best Convention events in Chmemory. It was such a great example to all attendees of an enjoyable event that remains in compliance with Fraternity policies.

As per usual, the Convention festivities culminated with the traditional banquet on Saturday evening, where several awards were presented. The Goodbody Award went to Alpha Epsilon Delta, Northwestern University, and Alpha Iota Delta, Georgia Institute of Technology, received the Founders Trophy. Alpha Sigma, University of North Carolina, was honored with the Thayer Trophy.

This year’s recipient of the Albert S. Bard Award was William H. Gates, Jr., Theta Delta `49; Citation 22. Fitzhugh Lee Brewer, Jr., Eta Delta `53, was posthumously presented with the Howell Worth Murray Community Service Award, and the Stanley J. Birge Award went to Justin Charles Froeber, Pi Delta `10.

Distinguished Service Awards were conferred upon David Elson Nordford, Theta Delta `59; Citation 138, Donald Scott Rowe, Theta Delta `60; Citation 139, and Julian Bennett Emerson, Beta `80; Citation 140.

In its entirety, the 169th Annual Convention of Chi Psi was a great time for developing greater leadership skills and strengthening the ties of Brotherhood. It was a time to look forward to Chi Psi’s exciting future and celebrate the rich tradition of our illustrious past. Don’t miss next year’s event in Ann Arbor, Michigan. If it is anything like this year’s it is sure to be a great experience for everyone involved.
