Two Sewanee Greek organizations held a picnic in Guerry Garth last Friday to raise money for the family of a Grundy County sheriff’s deputy who was killed in the line of duty this summer. Serving food donated by local restaurants, Theta Pi and Chi Psi raised over $3,200 for the officer’s family.

Deputy Shane Tate, 29, was shot and killed in June as he served a probation warrant on a suspect in Monteagle. He is survived by his wife and five children.

The fundraiser was the brainchild of Theta Pi Community Service Chair Katie Gojkovich. "I was on the Mountain all summer, and the day Deputy Tate died, I truly understood the sacrifice of local police, fire, and emergency services,” Gojkovich says. "He was only 29 and had five children, and that really hit me. I knew this was an opportunity for Greek organizations to make a difference.”

More than 250 students, faculty, staff and community members paid $10 apiece to sample food from local restaurants that included pizza, burgers, barbecue and more.

The fundraiser was made possible through donations from local businesses including the Blue Chair, Shenanigans, Mountain Breeze, Crust, the Sewanee Market, Monteagle Diner, Lorena's Market, the Smokehouse, Pizza Hut, Smoke’n B’s BBQ, Shan's Chinese Buffet, Mountain Outfitters and Amazing Glaze.
