Challenge of Sports Today: Noble Ideals or Constant Scandal?

It seems nearly impossible to turn on a television, open a newspaper or magazine, or go online without being bombarded by massive scandals rocking the sports world. But sports have long been viewed as the training ground for leadership, teamwork and discipline, so why this disconnect? We turned to several Chi Psi Brothers who do or have worked in sports professionally, as athletes or in management and support, for their insights on this and more.

Not All Anniversaries Are the Same...

. . . and our 175th Anniversary Celebration will be like none before it!” That is the informal motto which is guiding our work on this unique Chi Psi event.

From August 2 to 7, 2016 we will celebrate 175 years of Brotherhood with what promises to be the largest gathering of Chi Psis ever! Since the Executive Council decided upon Colonial Williamsburg as the location of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration in the fall of 2010, we’ve been hard at work planning this exciting event. Read this article to learn about the incredible plans we’ve already made for next summer.

In the Chi Psi Eye

Chi Psi's American Idol

Not many of us can say we’ve started a nationally trending hastag, but Gamma Brother Michael Smith ’16. can Br. Smith is better known as Michael Simeon to American Idol fans. The Ole Miss electrical engineering major made a big splash on the hit show from the very beginning, charming judge Jennifer Lopez into a slow dance following his successful audition in Nashville, TN. From that point on, he spent several weeks wowing fans with his dynamic performances, making it all the way to the famed live rounds, the top 24.

From Freshman Go-Getter to CEO

There’s a clear passion and an intense excitement in 34-year-old Jeff Becker’s, ΘΔ ’03, voice when he talks about his growing business Kotis Design. Little did he know when he joined Chi Psi in the fall of 1999, his career was about to begin. What started with his volunteering to make t-shirts for an Theta Delta brotherhood event, has now grown into a $25 million business churning out a wide variety of promotional products.

Beta Undergraduate Vying for Spot on ABC's Shark Tank

At only 18 years old, Beta Brother Brandon Etheridge is already running Deck Head, a fledgling bow tie company, while also studying full-time at University of South Carolina. The company grew out of an idea he had in high school: inventing an interchangeable bow tie that can be mixed and matched to create a wider variety of looks. Now Brandon is working towards a spot on ABC's popular show Shark Tank in hopes of building his company into a full lifestyle brand.
