notes from Maverick Southern Kitchens

"Through his vision, creativity and management of his restaurant group Maverick Southern Kitchens, Dick Elliott has played a critical role in Charleston’s emergence on the worlds’ culinary stage.” - Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce.

This is just one of the many reasons why the Charleston Metro Chamber bestowed Dick Elliott with the Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award on September 19th at its Honors Night. This prestigious award is given each year to recognize an outstanding community volunteer demonstrating a lifetime of leadership.

The Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award was created in 1992 by the Chamber’s Board of Directors in honor of Joseph P. Riley, Sr., one of Charleston’s finest citizens and leaders. This prestigious award is given to an individual, who like "Big Joe,” demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities and uses their skills to make this region a better place.

"Our Charleston region has many challenges to work on---challenges we face because we’re striving to be a better place for people to learn, work and play,” Elliott said at the awards ceremony last night. "The Charleston region has so many talented, industrious people who really care about meeting those challenges. I’m grateful they have allowed me to work with them. And I’m filled with wonder to be in the company of previous Riley Leadership Award recipients.”

Inspired by a personal conviction to help others through education, economic development and the arts, Dick Elliott is active in many civic and charitable efforts throughout the region. He was the 2001-2002 Chair of the board of directors of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, where he served as an officer or board member from 1992 to 2012. Dick has served on many boards, most recently on the board of directors of Trident Technical College Foundation, College of Charleston Foundation, the Trident CEO Council, the MUSC Foundation, the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities and the Charleston Industry Roundtable of the Federal Reserve Board.
