Alpha Epsilon Delta is Going Green

The Epsilon Delta Lodge is going green. No, they are not changing colors, and the basement is still purple and gold.

What the Alpha has done is to work with a local not-for-profit, e-One, to retrofit a number of energy-consuming elements in the Lodge. They began with one very simple idea - changing the dish sprayer to a water efficient model. In January, the company's plumbing and electrical contractors instituted an array of changes. Incandescent exit signs were replaced with LED-based fixtures, new toilet-flushing mechanisms were installed and bulbs were replaced with CFL's.

The biggest change is the installation of motion-detector switches for lights in all the common areas, including bathrooms. Actually called vacancy switches, they must be manually turned on, but turn off after fifteen minutes if no sound or motion is sensed. Since the gentlemen at the Lodge tend to leave the lights on 24/7, this system will significantly cut electrical costs.

The total cost of this work was just over $5,000, with the Corporation and the Lodge sharing the expense. The estimated payback time for the work is less than two years. It likely will make all of the Brothers more aware of how the Alpha consumes energy.

In addition to these structural improvements to the Lodge, the Alpha has also begun an initiative to switch from disposable to washable plates. The Alpha has recently instituted the first step of this initiative, purchasing reusable plates for dinner. They currently spend several thousand dollars a year on styrofoam, so switching to reusable plates will offer the Alpha significant cost savings in addition to reducing Epsilon Delta's impact on the environment.
