Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman is the new president of the National District Attorney’s Association, the organization which represents the interests of prosecutors throughout the United States.

Mike Ramos, District Attorney from San Bernadino County in California, finished his year-long term and passed the gavel to Freeman at a luncheon July 17 in Minneapolis. Passing of the gavel was part of the NDAA’s Summer Summit, a three-day conference focused on reducing violence against women and their exploitation.

“Our work is noble. Our cause is just,” said Freeman in his acceptance speech, referring to prosecutors. “It is a noble profession. We have the ability to do the right thing every day and, God willing, we will do that."

More than 250 people attended the convention, which kicked off with welcoming remarks from Ramos and Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton.

Freeman served eight years in the Minnesota Senate. He was elected Hennepin County Attorney in 1990 and 1994 and made his second run for Minnesota governor in 1998. In 2006, he ran again to reclaim his seat as the county’s prosecutor and is now in his fifth term.

Freeman is a 1970 graduate of Rutgers College in New Brunswick, NJ where he was class president for two years and president of the Chi Psi Fraternity, Alpha Rho ’70. He served eight years in the US Army Reserve, retiring as a captain in intelligence. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1974.

The National District Attorneys Association was formed in 1950 by local prosecutors to advance their causes and issues at the national level. Representatives of the association meet regularly with the Department of Justice, members of Congress and other national associations to represent the views of prosecutors in the crafting of federal and national policies and programs that affect law enforcement and county prosecutors.
