Chi Psi Loses Two Albert S. Bard Award Recipients

The Albert S. Bard Award recognizes Brothers who “improve the lot of humankind through their intellectual or cultural endeavors.” Over the past two weeks we lost both the 1994 recipient, Banks C. Talley, Sigma ’50, and the 1995 recipient, Richard Wilbur, Chi ’42.

Richard Wilbur, Chi ‘42, whose meticulous, urbane poems earned him two Pulitzer Prizes and selection as the national poet laureate in 1987, died on October 14. He spent 40 years in academia, teaching at Harvard, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Smith, and his alma mater, Amherst. Bro. Wilbur was the keynote speaker at the 154th Annual Convention in Clinton, NY in 1995. Our condolences to the family and friends of Brother Wilbur. Full text of his obituary may be found here.

Our condolences are also extended to the family and friends of Banks Talley, Sigma ’50, a former Trustee of the Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc., who died on October 19. Bro. Talley was an accomplished man of many talents. At UNC he served as #1, was President of the Dialectic Literary Society and a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Old Well. For 33 years he served as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at N.C. State University, where he was known for creating an arts-intensive atmosphere at a traditional STEM university. In honor of his accomplishments, the student center at NCSU bears his name. After retiring from N.C. State he went on to serve as Executive Director of the N.C. Symphony, travelled extensively throughout the world, attended concerts, and continued to be an accomplished gardener. His full obituary can be found here.
