Another successful Convention has come to a close. Hosted by Alpha Upsilon Delta at the Wake Forest University, more than 300 Brothers and guests joined to take part in Chi Psi’s annual family reunion and explore the beautiful city of Winston-Salem, NC.

With several Fraternity leaders completing their terms of service, a number of new Brothers were elected to those positions. Current Eta Delta Lodge Manager Francis Howitt ’16 was elected to serve as Undergraduate Representative on the Executive Council. Beginning a three-year term on the Executive Council is James Haltom, Σ ’03. Br. Haltom lives in Brentwood, TN and works as a business and litigation attorney for Burr & Forman, LLP and serves as a Captain in the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Completing terms of service to the Council were Undergraduate Representative Matt Strauss, ΣΔ ’12, Kevin Almond, Σ ’83. Br. Almond joined the Council in 2010, bringing a strong professional background in development and strategic planning to both the Council and the Trust.

Upsilon Delta Brother John Chinuntdet ’88 has completed his term on the Trust after becoming a Trustee in 2010. Br. Chinuntdet lives in Charlotte, NC where he works for Moore & Van Allen Law, co-heading the firm’s Investment Team. Joining the Trust is Art Washburn, YΔ ’88, who works as a Principal at Alpha Omega Wealth Management in Richmond, VA.

In addition to these changes in leadership, Convention’s educational programming was very successful. Through specific tracks for #1s, #4s, Recruitment Chairmen, select Lodge Managers and alumni along with the joint session for all attendees, Spencer Institute programming provided participants with a variety of tools and resources for all areas of operation.

Concluding the first full day of educational programming at the Spencer Institute was the annual Awards Dinner for The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Inc. There, the 2013 scholarships and fellowships were awarded to many of Chi Psi’s most exceptional undergraduates, and Alphas Rho and Iota were given the two inaugural Program for Excellence grants for their outstanding use of Program for Excellence concepts. The Trust also honored Wake Forest Associate Dean of Campus Life with the Ferdinand Van Siclen Parr Award and Jim Watkins Phillips, Jr., Σ ’79, with the Albert Sprague Bard Award.

On Friday evening, Convention goers joined Upsilon Delta Brothers on Wake Forest’s quad for a Low Country Boil.

As per usual, the Convention festivities culminated with the traditional banquet on Saturday evening, where several awards were presented. The Goodbody Award went to Alpha Rho Delta, Miami University. Alpha Xi, Stevens Institute of Technology, received the Founders Trophy, the gentlemen of Alpha Theta Delta, University of Washington, were honored with the Thayer Trophy. Alpha Xi received another exciting accolade as its current #1 Brandon Vandegrift was honored with the Birge Award. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Verne G. Istock, E ‘62, Citation 147 and Joseph B. Hughes, B ’84, ΨΔ ’96, Citation 148.

In its entirety, the 172nd Annual Convention of Chi Psi was a great time for developing greater leadership skills and strengthening the ties of Brotherhood. It was a time to look forward to Chi Psi’s exciting future and celebrate the rich tradition of our illustrious past. Don’t miss next year’s event in Nashville, TN. If it is anything like this year’s it is sure to be a great experience for everyone involved.
