The following is a letter from Dr. George W. Ray III A ‘54, to all alumni of Alpha Omicron Delta. It is emailed by the Chi Psi Online Community to all active email address on file at the CO.

Dear Brothers in Chi Psi,

Greetings from Lexington, where there is good news and bad news concerning Alpha Omicron Delta of Chi Psi. First, the bad news. Winter Term recruitment results show a clear division of the fourteen fraternities on campus into the "haves” and the "have nots.” Unfortunately for us, we are in the latter category. Five fraternities pledged eight men or fewer: Phi Gamma Delta (8), Pi Kappa Alpha (7), Phi Kappa Sigma (6), Sigma Phi Epsilon (4) and Chi Psi (0). Thus, it has become painfully apparent that after several years of middling recruitment success, we are fast losing critical mass within the Greek community at Washington and Lee. When the eight senior Brothers graduate this May, the likelihood is that only 15 or so Brothers will return to the Lodge next fall.

Now for the good news. Recently, an impromptu crisis team consisting of our Central Office staff in Nashville, Brothers Andy Dewing and Lathrop Nelson, the present and immediate past presidents of Alpha Omicron Delta Corporation, and I discussed various options to address the membership crisis. Our judgment is that now is the time for the Brotherhood to provide "succor and assistance” to our struggling Alpha. To that end, we will hold a "summit” meeting on campus of Alpha Omicron Delta alumni on Saturday, May 16, to discuss the situation with all stakeholders—The National Fraternity, Washington and Lee Greek officials, the Actives, and the Alpha Corporation—to develop a plan of action not just to stave off dormancy, but also to guide the Alpha back to the path of excellence by recovering the pioneering spirit that fueled our rise to prominence at Washington and Lee in the last century.

Since the Alpha's founding in 1977, well over 300 Brothers have been initiated into the bonds of Chi Psi, so, ironically, in our Alumni ranks we now have strength in numbers. I hope many of you will be able to attend the May summit and contribute to a recovery plan that will allow Omicron Delta to stay in the Lodge for the remaining 2/3 of our 99-year lease. Additional information on the meeting follows with directions for the ways in which you can indicate your willingness to participate. I realize that family, business, or geographical circumstances will keep many of you from attending the summit, but we will provide ways for every voice to be heard in the critical months ahead. Whatever you choose to do, we hope it will insure that future generations of W. and L. men will have the opportunity to enjoy lasting friendships in Chi Psi. We need your support now! With fraternal best wishes to you all, I remain,

Yours in the Bonds,

George W. Ray III A ‘54

Schedule: Saturday, May 15, 2010
Participants will gather in Northen Auditorium at 8:00 AM for breakfast. The summit will begin at 8:45 with opening remarks from Dr. Ray. Central Office facilitators will then work with participants to accomplish the following goals:
· Understand the competitive environment in which WLU fraternities operate
· Develop a clear vision for Alpha Omicron Delta
· Identify standards for recruitment and membership
· Creating an advisory board and detailed structure for supporting undergraduate activity
· Identify expectations for alumni involvement and opportunities for all levels of commitment
· Develop a short term plan for "righting the ship”

Participants are invited to gather for dinner in Lexington Saturday evening, but all critical programming should be complete by the end of the day on Saturday.
