Lodge Alumni Report
Br. John Goodwin, Beta '72

We have just opened our eighth year in the Lodge, and I am pleased to report that, in most respects, it is in as good of shape as the day we moved in. Yes, there are a few cosmetic blemishes here and there, but overall the Brothers have taken great care of the property. We can't lose sight of the fact that we lodge thirty-nine undergraduates there, and another one hundred drop by daily. That's a lot of wear and tear!

What does it take to keep everything in good condition? Throughout the academic year, Tommy Outlaw, Beta '78, and I respond to problems as they arise. The Lodge has nine separate HVAC systems, so Tommy has his hands full trying to keep everybody comfortable…a nearly impossible task. On a day-to-day basis our Lodge Director, Shanna Sheppard, and Lodge Manager, Adrian Caspar, Beta '13, keep us informed of problems as they arise.

Typically, we take care of major items when the Lodge empties for the summer. Several projects were taken on this summer, including:

  • Thorough cleaning
  • Servicing of all mechanical, electrical and kitchen equipment.
  • Repainting the second and third floor hallways as well as the middle staircase, a high-traffic area
  • Cleaning and waxing the vinyl tile floors in the upstairs corridors and kitchen
  • Cleaning the tile floors in all of the restrooms and the dining room
  • Repairing/replacing damaged furniture in the bedrooms

There are several maintenance projects that need to be done every five years to ensure nice bedrooms for the undergraduates. Last year, all bedrooms were emptied and repainted, and this year we took care of cleaning and waxing the floors.

In addition, there are always special projects. This year we were able to pressure-wash the front portico and install a new vinyl tile floor in the third-floor Brothers' Room. The undergraduate Brothers had installed vinyl wall covering under the chair rail last spring, so we repainted the wall above and the ceiling. The result was a brand new space.

Our general attitude when building the Lodge was to select materials that would last. Now it's up to each of us to keep it in shape for the generations of Alpha Beta Brothers to come.

The Lodge is the finest structure at the Greek Village, in our opinion, and we challenge the undergraduates to treat it like their home and leave it in better shape for those who come behind them. Please come down to visit when you can. It is Chi Psi's home for all Beta Brothers who value and take care of it.
