As we sat at our formal dinner listening to Brother Julian Emerson speak to prospective new members about the responsibility that they must accept becoming a member of Chi Psi, our current President Andrew Dipaolo '12 received an email from the Office of Greek Life telling him to halt all rush activities. This demand from the Greek Life director was directed at all Fraternities across campus. The Office had determined that due to six fraternities rush malpractice resulting in hospital visits and property damage, rush would have to be halted until a solution to the problem could be developed. This demand infuriated the other fraternities, including Chi Psi, as we had had not committed any rush infringements during rush week.
For the next four days lawyers threatened the Office of Greek life with a class action law suit that would not end in their favor. The administration eventually developed a plan that would allow all fraternities to issue bids with a few restrictions. For the fraternities that were not accused of bad rush practices, we would have to attend a risk management seminar and cancel all social events for two weeks. For the accused fraternities, they would be issued many more restrictions. Chi Psi plans to complete all necessary requirements and continue to abide by all school wide bylaws.
