|Alpha Beta Fall 2011 Corporation Report|
Alpha Beta Corporation Report
After a number of years "in the wilderness” that included low membership, ungentlemanly behavior and financial challenges, we are pleased to report the state of our Alpha is good… and getting better.
We have more than 110 Brothers returning for the 2011-2012 school year and recently pledged 29 for the fall class. While the membership number is higher than our normal, the average membership in Greek organization at USC is the largest in history. We owe our current positive state to a number of factors: alumni who have continued to display extraordinary commitment to Beta (including John Goodwin, '72, John Austell '61, Norman Stuckey '83, Tommy Outlaw '78 and a number of others), Anthony DiPaolo ‘11 who spearheaded a tremendous recruitment effort several years ago as recruitment chair and later served as #1 and IFC president, Kyle Belles '11 who ably served as #4 and #1 and to many of you who have supported the Alpha both financially and with your time and energy as we built back a strong Alpha. Thank you!
How it was accomplished
We returned to basics a few years ago with values based recruitment, quality pledge education program followed by a national Chi Psi initiation and rituals tradition that did not allow for any hazing or silly behavior that detracted from what it meant to be a "good” Chi Psi.
The results have been outstanding:
We still have a "ways to go before we sleep” with a focus on campus leadership, community involvement and academic improvement, but we are moving in the right direction.
The Lodge is in superb condition as you can read from Br. Goodwin's report. We maintain a $1.5M mortgage and made the decision a few years ago that, until the Alpha was in good shape, we would suspend actively asking for alumni to fulfill their original fundraising pledges. Many of you have already paid your commitment in full, and we gratly appreciate that support. Our near term goal is to raise $350K – 500K within the next few years and establish a long term mortgage at the $1M level –sustainable with undergraduate rent, to include repairs and Lodge operations. More inforamtion is to come later this year.
We fund a full time, live-in Lodge Director (a USC employee) that helps manage the Lodge including a kitchen preparing meals for 100+ each day. The food is very good due to our dual chef team of Josh and George! Please stop by if you are in the area, and enjoy the setting and the undergraduate hospitality. They are a neat group.
The future and how you can help
Please support us by volunteering your time to advise the undergrads on career choices, Alpha operations or just being a good citizen. We need to refresh the Alumni Corporation and Advisory Board structure over the next year as we believe it is healthy to bring on different alumni for new perspectives and energy. Of course, your financial support allows us to improve the Alpha experience for future undergraduates.
We would also ask that you make sure we have your latest email address by registering at www.chipsi.org/southcarolina. This will help us to communicate most efficiently and cost effectively.
We all enjoyed the benefits of Chi Psi at Alpha Beta due to those who came before us. My best friends in life are Chi Psis, and most of my life's successes and enjoyment has been because of Chi Psi. These are the reasons I choose to give back. Hope you will join me.
