First Ever Midyear Leadership Retreat a Success

With 25 undergraduates and staff in attendance, this week’s pilot Midyear Leadership Retreat proved to be a great opportunity for Alpha leaders to learn, share ideas and provide input on some of the Fraternity’s latest programming initiatives.

From January 3-5, select leaders from a test group of Alphas gathered outside Nashville, Tenn. for a new leadership training retreat facilitated by Central Office staff. Modeled as companion programming for the new #1’s Manual set to be released soon, the Midyear Leadership Retreat sought to educate our Alphas’ leaders and provide them with the necessary tools for strong daily operations.

With high-level presentations from facilitators followed by a series of in-depth discussion exercises, the Midyear Leadership Retreat provided Alpha leaders with comprehensive training in the areas of general Alpha administration, financial management, risk management, the recruitment, pledge education, and initiation process, as well as the Program for Excellence.

The retreat was casual but focused, providing an excellent atmosphere for in-depth learning and leadership development. Undergraduates were given many opportunities to network with the rest of our Alphas’ leaders to share ideas and learn new ways to drive an Alpha to excellence. Beyond the individual Alpha, the retreat also challenged participants to look past their daily experience and consider their hopes and expectations for the Fraternity as a whole. With so many of our undergraduate leaders gathered, the interactive nature of the programming helped participants to work together to envision the future of Chi Psi.

As with the Regional Conferences, great emphasis was placed on charging the undergraduates to take ownership in Fraternity development. Undergraduates were given many opportunities to express their needs in hopes of developing new resources while further developing those already in existence. Several newly developed resources were introduced to the undergraduates, and participants were given a preview of several resources that are currently in development.

With renewed motivation, the men returned to their Alphas with clear goals and action plans for the coming semester. In a feedback session concluding the retreat, Alpha leaders agreed that the retreat provided them with the necessary tools and ideas to lead their Alpha more effectively. Undergraduates in attendance noted that the programming provided a great opportunity to take a more technical approach to many of the higher level topics covered at the Spencer Institute every summer at Annual Convention.
