Alpha Sigma Awarded 2010 Thayer Trophy

Chi Psi Fraternity recently honored its University of North Carolina Brothers, Alpha Sigma, with the highest award in the Fraternity. The Thayer Trophy recognizes UNC’s Chi Psi as the most exceptional in the country based on the Alpha’s great achievements in alumni involvement, academics, and community and campus contributions. After a series of interviews, the highly coveted trophy was given to Alpha Sigma on Saturday, Aug. 7 at Chi Psi’s Annual Convention in Seattle, Wash.

"Many Alphas had remarkable success this year, and we were truly honored to be considered among them as finalists for the Thayer Trophy. While our undergraduate achievements were impressive, we recognize that those achievements would not have been possible without assistance from our alumni,” said William Decosimo, Alpha Sigma’s #1.

Alumni involvement truly was an area of excellence for Alpha Sigma. The Alpha hosted an alumni weekend and 30-year reunion for the Class of `79 along with "Saturday in the Sideyard” tailgate events before Saturday football games. The Alpha Sigma Educational Foundation, made up of several alumni, awarded active Brothers a total of $4,000 in scholarships for travel study opportunities. Also, the Alpha’s alumni advisory board produced regular communication through email and newsletters to ensure optimal alumni involvement in all Alpha operations.

In addition to outstanding alumni involvement, the Alpha Sigma Brothers have continued a long tradition of academic excellence. With a cumulative GPA of 3.39, the highest among IFC chapters at UNC, Alpha Sigma boasts seven Phi Beta Kappas and a Rhodes Scholar. The men also hosted two faculty receptions this year and were also host to this year’s Chi Psi Southeast Rowe Regional Leadership Conference.

With over 90% of Brothers participating in organizations outside of the fraternity as well as some sort of service activity, the men are incredibly involved on campus as well as in the Chapel Hill community. Alpha Sigma hosted two events for Brothers and their "Little Buddies” to reach out to underprivileged children in the community. Additionally, two Brothers founded and organized the campus-wide GenerAction Week, motivating hundreds of students to participate in this week of service. Eight Brothers are actively involved in student government, and six are part of the Student Attorney General staff. Also, the Sports Editor and Photo Editor of The Daily Tar Heel are also Chi Psi Brothers.

"We hope that this award will encourage future generations of Chi Psi to strive for excellence, just as the successes of our predecessors encouraged us in our endeavors this year,” said Decosimo.

Alpha Sigma is just one of the extraordinary Alphas in Chi Psi. Throughout 29 of the nation’s most prestigious academic institutions, the Fraternity’s emphasis on leadership, personal and professional development, and strong Brotherhood helps many young men become strong gentlemen. The Fraternity would like to congratulate the Brothers of Alpha Sigma for their many achievements, wishing them continued success in all of their future endeavors.
