Meet Chi Psi's Newest #7: Verne G. Istock, E '62
Epsilon Brother Verne G. Istock ’62 is typically a man of few words, though that was not the case when we sat down with him to get to know Chi Psi’s newest #7. The 26th Brother to serve the Fraternity in this role, the typically reserved Istock lets us in on a side of him rarely seen.
Br. Istock worked in banking for nearly 40 years. The former President and CEO of Bank One Corporation began his career as a credit analyst at National Bank of Detroit (NBD) in 1963, just after graduating from the University of Michigan with his B.A. in economics and his MBA in finance. The self-made man quickly worked his way up the ranks, becoming chairman and chief executive officer of NBD Bancorp and NBD Bank in 1994 and eventually serving as Chairman and President of Bank One until his retirement in 2000.
The youngest of four children, the Grosse Pointe, Mich. native credits much of his success to the lessons he learned while growing up and as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan. Verne joined Alpha Epsilon in the spring of 1959 and later served the Alpha as #4.5, #4 and #1. It was also during his time in Ann Arbor that Verne met his wife Judy (who served as President of Delta Delta Delta Sorority). The couple’s son Steven followed in their footsteps, attending University of Michigan. There he joined Alpha Epsilon and graduated in 1989. Judy’s brother-in-law is Bill Stocklin E’66. Verne and Judy remain ardent supporters of the University and continue to support it in various roles.
Following his election at this summer’s 173rd Annual Convention, we spoke with Verne to learn more about his time in Chi Psi, his vision of the future of the Fraternity, his advice for young Brothers, and much more...

Below we recognize 17 of these most exceptional young alumni and undergraduates who have already performed well beyond their years. Get to know this year's honorees in the upcoming issue.
Phi Restores its Historic Bat Light
In 2012 Phi Brothers from all generations joined at the old Phi Lodge, now a campus building called Philip Spencer House, to celebrate Hamilton College’s bicentennial. The Brothers reminisced about fond memories of time at Hamilton and the conversation quickly turned to a special remnant of the former Lodge, its beloved “Bat Light” that most Brothers thought had been lost for some time. Read more about how the bat light was found and restored.

Spencer Properties Supports Chi Psi Properties
In 2007, recognizing the importance of the fundamental Chi Psi tradition of shared living, the Executive Council formed Spencer Properties in order to provide financial and operational support to all Chi Psi Lodges and properties. While Spencer Properties has owned and operated a number of Chi Psi Lodges since its inception, it is important to note that it exists to be a resource for all Chi Psi Lodges. Over the last two years, in partnership with CSL Management, Spencer Properties has been working to solidify its role in the national organization and optimize the services and support it provides to all Alphas...
