In 1963, C. Ray Flynn, B’67, was initiated into Chi Psi by
Br. Stanley Birge, X 1908, I 1914, the Fraternity’s legendary former #7 who at
that time had presided over initiations in every Alpha and had personally held the
initiation of one third of living Chi Psis at that time. Br. Birge is well
remembered for his dedication to Chi Psi and his selfless energy to inspire
others to excel in their personal goals.
Br Flynn was greatly influenced by the life values and leadership
qualities he acquired from his Chi Psi experience and his association with Br.
Birge and his family, which served to amplify the moral values and character
instilled by his own parents. This year Br. Flynn has made a generous endowment
to the Chi Psi Educational Trust which will fund annual $10,000 scholarships,
currently the largest given by the Fraternity, for many years to come.
This scholarship program will be available to rising seniors,
with the first scholarship to be awarded in July at the 173rd National
Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Scholarship application details are
available at www.chipsi.org/scholarships.
Another $10,000 scholarship will be awarded in 2015; at least two scholarships
of $10,000 each will be awarded in 2016 and each year thereafter.
Ray talks of being especially impressed by Br. Birge "as a
true gentleman leader and model to be emulated.” In addition to interacting
with Br. Birge on his trips to the University of South Carolina, Br. Flynn had
the opportunity to visit with the Birge family many times at their home in St.
Louis, Missouri and traveled with the family out West.
"I’m hopeful this scholarship will help identify natural
leaders such as Stan Birge and then encourage their pursuit of excellence
through education, involvement, communication and cooperation,” Br. Flynn says.
"Hopefully these resources will help a senior broaden his world perspective
through travel and permit him to spend more time in worthwhile activities benefiting
his Chi Psi Alpha, the fraternity system as a whole and his respective
university,” he added.
Trust Chairman Julian Emerson has termed this endowment as
a milestone along the path of developing a truly meaningful scholarship program
for our undergraduates. It sets a goal for all of us to consider as we consider
our charitable contributions. These resources are critical to the development
of today’s Chi Psi gentleman who has the challenge of succeeding in an ever
complex world that demands excellence and perseverance.
#23 Sam Bessey hopes the Ray Flynn financial commitment
will encourage others to support the Trust with resources impacting the lives
