"On a freezing cold backcountry trip it hit us — regular face masks are overkill. Why? Your nose and cheeks have slower circulation so they get cold and damaged first. Keep them warm and the rest of your face is happy. Problem solved! Plus you’ll feel warm and fuzzy knowing we make ‘em right here in the USA."
That's what Phi Brothers Josh Kunkel '04 and Kevin Bourque '04 say inspired them to launch Outeru and produce what they call the world's best face mask - the Outeru "FaceGlove." The FaceGlove protects only the parts of the face most sensitive to cold, frostbite and sunburn, which alleviates the common issue of goggle fog and doesn't sacrifice your ability to breathe.
The two entered their concept in a business plan pitch competition in May of 2012 and won, providing the funding needed to launch the product. Soon after, Josh and Kevin's fellow Phi Brothers Erik Rapp '04 and Fabrizo Verga '03 signed on as early investors. "This truly is a Chi Psi project, through and through!" says Josh.
Outeru currently produces FaceGloves for both men and women and is working to build out its product line of face protection solutions.
Josh and Kevin are just two among Chi Psi's network of entrepreneurs, and Josh feels that this network is a valuable asset for any Brother looking to get into the start-up world. "I have spent the past 8 years in the start-up world and it is very intimidating - the more resources that can be tapped the better and it seems the Chi Psi network could be very valuable. And in the case of Outeru - sometimes it's a sheer numbers and marketing need, where again the vast Chi Psi network is incredibly valuable."
