One of the most negative stereotypes today’s undergraduates
fight to overcome is the perception that they display and support violence
against women. As gentlemen of Chi Psi, we strive to be an organization in
which that is just not the case. To take a stand and show our support for
stong, confident women, Chi Psi has become the lead sponsor for the Girls Fight
Back national tour.
Girls Fight Back (GFB) is an organization that teaches young
women across the country the basics of self-defense and personal safety. By
empowering women to take their safety into their own hands and live without
fear on today’s college campuses.
"Chi Psi needs to support GFB because we’re about
self-respect, regardless of who has it,” says #23 Sam Bessey.
He adds that "Chi Psi is a Fraternity of gentlemen – so
while we expect that we’d never be on the receiving end of GFB’s techniques –
we do want everyone to feel empowered and confident. Our Brothers can’t be
everywhere, so we’re sponsoring GFB because we want everyone safe.”
GFB was started by Erin Weed after her sorority sister
Shannon McNamara was murdered in 2001. Because Shannon fought her attacker,
there was enough evidence to convict the man who now serves a life sentence in
Illinois prison. Erin founded the organization to help ensure that Shannon’s
legacy would live on long after her tragic death.
"Thank you Sam. Thank you men of Chi Psi,” Erin says. "Thanks
for caring about our plight. Thanks for being hilarious, awesome and
non-threatened by women who know how to regulate. Thanks for having the guts to
be so public with your intolerance. And thanks for having our back. (We got yours too.)” Click here to read a blog from Girls Fight Back thanking Chi Psi for this sponsorship.
